Community. We blog about it all the time. We talk about it all the time. And that’s because it’s the glue that brings us all together. The FUNCTION family is just that – a family. And part of what we do as a family, is support others. We travelled to Synergy Strength and Conditioning in Saskatoon this past weekend to compete as Team FUNCTION in the Bridge City Beat Down, and intertwine ourselves with other fitness families across three provinces – Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
The Bridge City Beat Down consisted of six events for the Division 1 athletes, and five events for the Division two athletes. It took place over Friday and Saturday, with about 120 athletes competing across the two divisions. FUNCTION sent three athletes to compete – Taryn (Div 1), Kurtis (Div 1), and Karlyn (Div 2).
All athletes represented FUNCTION strong. With this being Kurtis and Karlyn’s only second competition under their belts, they both competed hard and gave all their effort during every event. They were faced with movements they had never tried before – climbing walls, Prowler pushes – and they still managed to crush the workouts. Karlyn even won her heat in the Prowler push! Taryn climbed to the podium and finished in 3rd place, behind Laurie Meschishnic, who placed second at the CrossFit Games in the Master’s Division this past summer.
The entire event was hosted and organized so efficiently. It was a pleasure getting to meet all the different athletes from our neighbouring provinces, and strengthening our community ties. With added camaraderie from this weekend, the FUNCTION family only became faster, stronger, and better.
A big thank you goes out to Chad Benko and Ian MacDonald for organizing such a successful event. Thank you for hosting Team FUNCTION – we can’t wait for next year!
